To set up the Raspberry Pi for the first time, you will likely also need an HDMI/AV monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse.

How to connect a Raspberry Pi to a laptop running Windows

The first step in connecting aRaspberry Pi for a Windows laptopMake sure the Pi board is powered off and no motors or batteries are connected.

Make sure the SD card is fully inserted into the Pi, then plug the WiFi dongle into one of your Pi's USB ports.

Then connect your Pi to your laptop using an Ethernet cable. If your laptop doesn't have a slot for an Ethernet cable, you'll need to purchase an Ethernet to USB adapter.

Connect your power supply to your Raspberry Pi, plug it into the socket and switch it on. Once power is connected to your wall, the Pi will turn on.

At this point you should go to your laptop and open Putty (if you haven't already downloaded Putty to your laptop, you can find it ato Website officials do putty). In Putty, enter your hostname like this: "raspberrypi.local". Then click on "Open".

If everything works correctly, you'll get a security warning about a possible breach stating: "The server's host key does not match the key cached by putty in the registry.

This means that the server administrator has changed the host key. Just click yes on this message and then a terminal will open asking for your username and password.

The username they are looking for is "pi" while the password is "raspberry". After entering the correct credentials, you will be connected to the Pi's terminal.

Once you've reached this stage, you're almost done; All you have to do now is configure the WiFi connection, the process of which we will describe a little below.

But first... what if you're using a Mac?

How to connect a Raspberry Pi to a Mac

The steps required to connect your Raspberry Pi to your Mac are not very different from the steps required for Windows (see also “How to connect the Raspberry Pi to the cloud').

As with a Windows laptop, the first thing you should do is make sure the Pi card is fully powered off and the SD card is securely inserted into the Pi.

Then plug the WiFi dongle into one of your Pi's USB ports.

Then connect the Pi to the Mac using an Ethernet cable (or use an Ethernet to USB adapter if you're using a Macbook Air and it doesn't have an Ethernet port). Connect your power supply to your Pi before plugging it into the outlet and turning it on.

Open your Mac's Terminal, which you can find in the Applications and Utilities folder (or you can find it by clicking the spotlight, which looks like a magnifying glass in the top-right corner of your Mac's screen; alternatively, you can press Command + die Spacebar and select the icon that opens the terminal).

Type 'ssh[email protected]' in the terminal and run the command.

If you have already connected your Pi to your laptop, the WiFi dongle is already connected to the Pi. Jump to this page: 'https://www.realvnc.com/download/vnc/', find the right version for your laptop or Mac and click 'Download'.

After the VNC file is downloaded, open it in a browser and click "Continue", then "Continue" again, "OK" in the pop-up window and "Continue" again.

You only need the VNC viewer, so disable the VNC server (see also 'How to enable VNC on Raspberry Pi'). Then click "Next" and "Install" again, and you will receive a message that the installation was successful.

Close this popup and go to Finder, Applications, RealVNC and VNC Viewer. This will open the VNC viewer. In the VNC Server field, enter raspberrypi.local:1. Click Next on the warning pop-up.

At this point you will be prompted to access your SD card. The password is raspberry, so enter it and click OK.

You will now see an icon on your desktop entitled “WLAN settings”. So click here and then click “Manage Networks” and then click “Scan”. Select the network your laptop is using and enter your password for that network.

Close the scan window, select the Current Status tab and select the correct network. If the process is successful you will see an IP address and your connection should be ready.
